Baked sweet potato fries. What to type about those? I have favorite food phases and every few months/weeks I am completely obsessed with different food. My current phase is a deep relationship with fries and ketchup. Literally any kind of fries and a lot of ketchup. They are one of my favorite snacks.
When I say fries, I just want to mention, I am talking about fries baked in oven or made in the air fryer. Deep fried ones are not really my kind of thing. I really don’t like them, as usually in restaurant, they serve them cold and swimming in oil.
People often tell me, that they do not know, how to get crispy fries out of the oven. Guys, you cannot copy exactly the same result as fries from the deep fryer. The truth is, there are some tricks, I’ve tried over and over with a variety of different methods for making homemade sweet potato fries, but I think this baked sweet potato fries recipe will does its job!
There are some tricks and tipps I share with you to get perfect homemade sweet potato fries
- Cut your fries into the right shape
We aim for fries about 0.5cm wide, or close to it. Thick fries never get crispy, no matter what we do.
- Let them take a bath
Put your chopped fries into a bowl. Then cover the fries completely with cold water and let them soak for at least 60 minutes. This will help to rinse off the excess starch and help the potatoes crisp up beautifully in the oven. Once the potatoes have soaked, rinse and drain them completely dry.
- Cornstarch is your best friend
It really helps to get the fries really crispy! It’s a little trick Basti read once. I cannot remember where. Try to play around with the cornstarch – olive oil ratio.
- Give your fries space
Once you add your fries to the baking sheet be sure that they are laying in an even, single layer and not overlapping. Otherwise these parts will not get crispy.
- It’s hot in here
Bake your fries at 180ºC. If the temperature is too low, they will not get crispy.
This time we were a bit creative so we sprinkle over fresh crumbled feta cheese. 🙂
And fries will fit to every kind of meal! Try them with some meatballs, or simply classy with a good steak. One of my favorites are fries with chicken. Did you already give our orange thyme roasted chicken a shot? I tell you, amazing!
